LAB-440-Harley-Davidson Just Walked Away From King Of The Baggers… and I Need to Talk About It 😳

Harley-Davidson has officially announced it will end its factory racing program in MotoAmerica's King of the Baggers series following the 2026 season, and the news has sparked plenty of controversy throughout the motorcycle community. After six seasons of intense competition against Indian Motorcycle, Harley-Davidson is shifting its racing strategy toward the FIM Harley-Davidson Bagger World Cup and new grassroots racing opportunities. Some fans are claiming Harley is walking away because Indian dominated the 2026 season, but is that really the case? The facts tell a different story. Harley-Davidson and Indian Motorcycle each captured three championships over six seasons, and Harley actually announced its plans for the Bagger World Cup back in 2025, the same year it won the King of the Baggers championship. In this episode of the Law Abiding Biker Podcast, we break down Harley's decision, examine the history of King of the Baggers, and discuss why this move could represent a significant shift in the future of performance bagger racing.

The King of the Baggers series began as a single race at Laguna Seca in 2020 and quickly exploded into one of the most exciting forms of American motorcycle racing. What started with heavily modified Harley-Davidson and Indian touring motorcycles evolved into a fiercely competitive championship featuring race bikes producing more than 190 horsepower and reaching speeds exceeding 185 mph. Along the way, the competition helped drive innovation in performance motorcycle parts and inspired production models such as the Harley-Davidson CVO Road Glide ST and Indian Challenger RR. Now, Harley-Davidson is focusing its factory racing efforts on the international Bagger World Cup, a spec racing series held during MotoGP weekends where competitors race identically prepared Harley-Davidson Road Glides. The format puts greater emphasis on rider skill, setup, and strategy while providing Harley-Davidson an opportunity to develop performance technology and Screamin' Eagle components for everyday riders. We discuss the potential benefits of racing on a global stage, the financial questions surrounding Harley's decision, and MotoAmerica's disappointment with the timing of the announcement.

So, what happens to King of the Baggers in 2027 and beyond? Indian Motorcycle will remain the only factory-backed manufacturer, with championship riders Hayden Gillim and Troy Herfoss returning to defend their success. Privateer teams will still be able to compete on Harley-Davidson Road Glides and Indian Challengers, but the absence of Harley's factory team raises serious questions about the future competitiveness and popularity of the series. We also discuss what could be next for Harley-Davidson racers Kyle Wyman and Bradley Smith, whether the Bagger World Cup will continue growing internationally, and how this decision could affect the motorcycle aftermarket. While we're disappointed to see the legendary Harley-Davidson versus Indian factory rivalry come to an end, we believe there's much more to this story than the divisive reactions circulating online. Whether you ride a Harley, Indian, or another motorcycle, we're all part of the same biker community. Join us as we separate fact from speculation, share our predictions for the 2027 racing season, and ask the big question: Can King of the Baggers survive without Harley-Davidson's factory racing team?
