If you just picked up a Figurati magnetic reusable oil filter, don't put it together yet — there's a lot of bad info floating around online, and getting this wrong can leave your Harley-Davidson with an oil leak right out of the gate.

We were one of the first sellers to carry them, and we've installed more of these than just about anyone — so when we say there's a right way and a wrong way to put one together, we mean it.

The Problem: Misinformation Online

There's a lot of confusion out there about how the Figurati filter goes together, and a lot of guys are unknowingly assembling theirs wrong. It doesn't always show up right away, but it will cause you problems — specifically, it won't seal properly once the filter is threaded onto your engine. Here are the two issues to watch for.

Issue #1: Spring Orientation

The spring inside the filter housing has a correct direction, and plenty of people get it backwards. The proper way, guaranteed, is to seat the spring in the bottom of the housing with the cone pointing up. That cone needs to sit right in the channel area near the bypass bearing.

Issue #2: Seating the Internal Filter Correctly

This is the mistake causing most of the problems we're seeing. The internal filter has four ears that need to line up with four channels inside the housing. Line the ears up with the channels, and pushing down gently gets you the correct spring tension.

Here's where guys mess it up: they shove the filter down as hard as they can, bottom out the spring, then twist it — and it locks. Except it's locked in the wrong spot. The ears aren't actually seated in the channels; they're jammed in too deep, below where they should be.

Why does that matter? Because the stud coming out of your engine that the filter threads onto won't be long enough now. If the filter is seated too deep, you'll thread it all the way on and end up with a gap — meaning it won't seal correctly. You'll also notice you can still turn the filter housing even after it “locks,” which is a clear sign that the ears are not in the channels.

The correct method: lightly push the filter down while feeling for the channels. When it hits the right spot, you'll feel and hear it click into place. Once it's properly seated, you should not be able to turn the internal filter in either direction — it's locked in solid. To remove it later, you have to push it slightly down and past a small lip before it will release from the channel. If it turns freely, it's not seated right — pull it back out and try again.

Why This Matters

Get this wrong and you're looking at a filter that won't seal against your engine and you'll see a visible gap.  It's an easy mistake to make and an easy one to avoid once you know what to look for.
