If you're still running the stock shift linkage on your Harley-Davidson, you're riding on borrowed time. Yes, even the newest models. It's not a matter of if it breaks — it's when. In this video we lay out every upgraded shift linkage option we carry in the Law Abiding Biker Store, install one on Lurch's Road Glide, and swap another onto my own Street Glide, so you can see exactly what's involved before you buy. (see video below)
We've covered shift linkages before on our YouTube Channel, but this time we pulled out nearly every option we stock side by side so you can see the differences in person — and we're giving one away, too.

Why the Stock Harley-Davidson Shift Linkage Fails
The factory shift linkage on a Harley-Davidson is a pot-metal piece connected at both ends with a pressed ball-and-socket joint. It works fine — until it doesn't. Over time, the constant movement wears the socket around the ball, and eventually it pops out and breaks. Read through the comments on any Harley shift linkage video on our YouTube Channel and you'll see how common this failure actually is.
Yes, some riders put on 50,000 miles without an issue. If that's you, consider yourself lucky — but more of these linkages fail than don't over time, and you don't want to find out on the side of the road on a trip.
What Makes an Upgraded Linkage Better

Every upgraded linkage in the  Law Abiding Biker Store solves the stock problem the same way: instead of a pressed ball-and-socket, they use a Heim joint — a solid, threaded rod-end bearing. It still gives you the same range of motion, but there's no socket to wear out and pop loose. In all the years the Law Abiding Biker Store has sold these, a Heim joint has never failed on us.
Heim-joint linkages come in two styles:
- One-piece with studs — the joint threads are built into the linkage itself, no separate bolt required.
- Bolt-through style — a nut and bolt pass through the Heim joint to secure it.
Both do the same job. It comes down to looks and personal preference.
The Shift Linkage Lineup at the Law Abiding Biker Store
We carry several linkage brands, and stock varies since some of these run in and out of availability:
- Kuryakyn — Our longtime best seller and the one that kicked off this whole product line for us years ago. Available in chrome and black. It's noticeably heavier than the billet options since it's built a little differently, but it's proven and reliable.
- Kraus Motor Co. — Made right here in the USA. Lightweight billet aluminum construction, available in several finishes including a ribbed black option and a machine finish.
- Ciro Chicane Collection — A newer addition to the lineup from the Ciro Chicane family of components (which also includes mirrors, brake pedals, and floorboards). Comes with bolt-through Heim joints, available in chrome or black.
- Thrashin Supply Co. — Available in chrome and black, bolt-through style.

You Don't Need an Exact Length Match
A lot of riders get hung up on matching the new linkage to the exact length of the old one down to the millimeter. Don't stress over it — you're only shifting about 1-2 inches of total travel, so as long as the length is close, you're fine. Any small difference gets taken up in the adjustment down at the shift lever itself, where the lever is pressed onto a splined shaft. Loosen it, move it a spline or two, and you'll dial in your preferred shift lever height regardless of which linkage you're running. (see our detailed install video below)
The Kraus EZ Shifter — Worth Installing at the Same Time
Lurch's Road Glide and my Street Glide are already running the Kraus EZ Shifter, a small aluminum component that changes the leverage point of your shift mechanism. It sounds too simple to make a difference, but it genuinely transforms how easy it is to find neutral — and it smooths out the feel through every gear. We've sold thousands of these out of the Law Abiding Biker Store.
It's available for twin cam or Milwaukee-Eight models, in black or machine finish, and takes about 10 minutes to install. If you're already swapping your shift linkage, it makes sense to install both at once rather than taking things apart twice.
