Why You Need a Security Latch System

If you have a luggage rack or passenger backrest attached to your Harley-Davidson, it’s important to ensure these accessories don’t fall victim to theft. The security latch system locks your docking hardware, making it impossible to remove without the proper key. By installing this system, you add an extra layer of protection to your prized accessories.

Tools and Parts You’ll Need

Here’s a list of the tools and parts you’ll need to complete this installation:

• Security latch kit (Harley OEM Part)
• 5/32” hex head wrench
• Ratchet or T-handle tool
• Barrel keys (included with the kit)

The kit comes with all the necessary hardware, including washers and the two locking mechanisms for your luggage rack and backrest.

Step 1: Choosing Your Side

When installing the security latch system, you have the option of locking either the right or left side of your luggage rack and backrest. In this demonstration, I’ll be locking the right side of my luggage rack. The same method can be applied to the other side if preferred.

Step 2: Removing the Original Bolt

First, identify the latch you want to replace. Using your 5/32” hex head wrench, remove the existing bolt and washer. Be sure to save the bolt and washer as you will need them for the new latch installation. After removing the hardware, slide the original latch off and leave the spring washer on the docking hardware.

Step 3: Installing the Security Latch

Next, take one of the new washers provided in the kit and place it over the spring washer you left on the docking hardware. Slide the new security latch into place, making sure the recessed portion faces outward and the flat side faces the plate.

Now, take the saved bolt and washer, and fasten the new latch in place. Use the 5/32” wrench to tighten the bolt until secure, but be careful not to over-tighten.

Step 4: Locking and Unlocking the Security Latch

The latch operates similarly to your original docking latch but with a locking mechanism. The kit includes two barrel keys—a longer key for the luggage rack and a shorter key for the backrest.

1. Insert the key into the cutout and give it a quarter turn to unlock the latch.
2. Once unlocked, the pin will release, allowing you to remove the luggage rack or backrest.
3. To lock, simply push the latch back into place. No key is needed to lock it—you can just press it down firmly, and it's secured.

Step 5: Repeating the Process for the Passenger Backrest

The process for securing your passenger backrest is identical to that of the luggage rack. 

Final Thoughts

Once installed, the security latch system will ensure that both your luggage rack and passenger backrest are locked securely in place. Before mounting either accessory, always remember to unlock the latch using the barrel key. After mounting, simply lock it back in by pushing the latch down, ensuring everything is securely attached to your Harley.
