If you have spent any time in the comments section of motorcycle forums or YouTube videos about oil filters, you already know this topic has a way of turning perfectly reasonable riders into overnight filtration engineers. Everyone has an opinion. Everyone has a number. And most of the time, nobody is talking about the same thing. (see video below)
In this article, we are going to break all of it down in plain biker language. No engineering seminars. No lab coats. Just real information you can actually use to make a smart decision about the oil filtration system on your Harley-Davidson.
And yes, we carry both the Figurati Reusable Magnetic Oil Filter and the PC Racing FLO reusable oil filter right here in the Law Abiding Biker Store. We are just a bootstrap company of bikers helping bikers, and we appreciate every single customer who supports what we do.
What We Are Actually Comparing
Before we get into the weeds, let's establish what we are talking about. There are two basic types of oil filters in this conversation.
On one side you have your traditional OEM or aftermarket throwaway paper-style oil filters. These are the filters most Harley riders have been using for years. You spin them on, ride your miles, spin them off, and throw them in the trash.
On the other side you have reusable serviceable stainless mesh oil filters. These are filters you can take apart, clean, inspect, and put back into service again and again. The two main players in this category for Harley-Davidson riders are the Figurati Reusable Magnetic Oil Filter and the PC Racing FLO.

Reusable Oil Filters Are Not New Technology
One of the first things we want to put to bed is the idea that running a reusable stainless mesh filter on your motorcycle is some kind of backyard science experiment. It is not.
This style of filtration has been used in racing and other high-demand applications for decades. It is established, accepted technology. So before anyone in the comments acts like this is some kind of wild new idea, understand that riders and engineers have been trusting this approach for a very long time.
The Micron Number Problem: Why You Cannot Just Compare One Number to Another
Here is where most of the internet arguments go completely off the rails.
A lot of riders see that some traditional Harley-style throwaway filters are published in the 5 to 10 micron range. Then they see a reusable filter rated at 25 microns absolute or 35 microns absolute and immediately conclude that the lower number must win.
Not so fast.
That micron number by itself does not tell the whole story. The reason is simple: not all micron ratings are measured or reported the same way. Some are nominal. Some are absolute. Some are tied to completely different test methods. And that means two numbers that look easy to compare on paper may actually represent two very different kinds of claims.
Nominal vs. Absolute: What It Actually Means
A nominal rating is kind of like saying, “Yeah, this filter catches a good amount of particles around that size.” It is a loose claim. In practice, a nominal rating typically means the filter captures around 50 percent of particles at the stated size. That means half are still getting through.
An absolute rating is a much stronger and more specific statement. It means the filter is stopping almost all particles at that size under the stated test conditions. It is a verified, meaningful number rather than a marketing-friendly estimate.
So when you see Figurati rated at 25 microns absolute, that is a more meaningful statement than a filter claiming 10 microns nominal. The absolute rating tells you something real. The nominal rating tells you something approximate at best.
How Oil Filter Testing Actually Works
Without turning this into a laboratory lecture, here is the simplified version of how oil filters get their ratings. Testers run contaminated fluid through the filter. They measure what goes in and what comes out. They count the particles the filter captures under specific test conditions and at specific flow rates.
The problem is that different manufacturers use different test methods. And when someone throws a micron number around without specifying whether it is nominal or absolute or what test method was used, that number means almost nothing on its own. That is why comparing two filters based on a single number without that context is, as we like to say, comparing apples to exhaust pipes.

The Dirty Little Secret Nobody Talks About: Why Filters Are Not Rated at 10 Microns Absolute
Here is something that came up in a recent episode of the Law Abiding Biker Podcast and we think it is one of the most important points in this entire conversation.
A lot of riders ask why reusable filters are not simply rated at 10 microns absolute. If finer is better, why not go as fine as possible?
Here is why.
Think about what a full-flow oil filter actually has to do on your Harley. It has to allow oil to pass through it fast enough to feed every moving part in the engine — at cold start, at high RPM, and everywhere in between. The finer you make the filter media, the more it restricts oil flow. And if it restricts flow too much, the bypass valve inside the filter opens up and your oil goes right around the filter entirely.
So now you have a 10 micron filter that is not actually filtering anything.
That is the dirty little secret the comment section warriors never factor in when they throw numbers around.
There are well-documented reports from the Harley community and sources like S&S Cycle describing exactly this problem with the 10 micron Twin Cam filter being run in Evolution motors. The filter was too restrictive for the Evo oiling system. Oil was backing up in the motor and pushing out wherever it could find an exit. Even Harley recognized that a finer micron rating is not always better because if the oil cannot push through the filter it simply goes around it.
The right question is never just what does this filter catch. The right question is whether oil is actually flowing through this filter or going around it entirely.
That is why the Figurati is rated at 25 microns absolute. It is not a compromise. It is the smart real-world answer to that question. You get a meaningful verified absolute rating with enough flow to ensure your oil is actually passing through the filter and doing its job every single time. That is a whole lot better than a tighter number on paper with unfiltered oil running through your motor.
It is also worth noting that reusable stainless mesh filters generally offer a higher oil flow rate than traditional paper filters, which means better circulation for your engine overall.

The Figurati Reusable Magnetic Oil Filter
Available now in the Law Abiding Biker Store
The Figurati is not just a stainless mesh filter. It is a complete filtration and protection system, and that distinction matters.
Here is what you get with the Figurati:
25-Micron Absolute Stainless Steel Mesh The mesh screen is the mechanical filtration layer of the system. It captures non-magnetic particles like brass and aluminum debris at a verified absolute rating.
Five Total Neodymium Magnets The Figurati includes four internal 2700-gauss neodymium magnets and one internal 2800-gauss neodymium magnet. That is five magnets total working alongside the stainless mesh to capture ferrous metal debris before it continues circulating through your engine. The mesh and the magnets are doing completely different jobs. The mesh catches particles by size. The magnets target metal debris that is attracted magnetically. Together they attack contamination from more than one direction.
Serviceable Bypass System This is one of the biggest differentiators the Figurati offers. The bypass system is completely user-serviceable. You can take it apart, inspect it, clean it, and put it back together. Most filters do not offer this. The bypass is set at 15 PSI and ensures that if the filter ever becomes restricted, oil can still reach your engine rather than starving it entirely.
Cooling Fins The fins on the outside of the Figurati are not just for looks, though they do look exceptional. They are functional cooling fins designed to help manage oil temperature as it passes through the filter. That is an additional layer of protection your standard throwaway filter simply does not offer.
Inspectability at Every Service With a throwaway filter you spin it off and throw it in the trash with no idea what it caught. With the Figurati you open it up at every service interval and you can see exa
ctly what the filter has been capturing. Fine metallic material can be normal. But if you ever see larger or unusual debris that is an early warning that something may be going on internally before it becomes a much more expensive problem. That is real-world value you cannot put a price on.
Beautiful Billet Housing The outer housing is machined from high-strength 6063 anodized aluminum and is available in seven colors: silver, black, purple, blue, red, orange, and gold. Very few parts are both genuinely functional and genuinely beautiful. This one is both.

The PC Racing FLO Reusable Oil Filter
Also available in the Law Abiding Biker Store
The FLO is not a product we dismiss. It has been around a long time, has a solid reputation in the riding community, and is absolutely a legitimate reusable stainless filter option.
Here is what the FLO offers based on published specifications:
- 10 micron nominal filtration
- 35 microns absolute on a one-pass test
- One neodymium magnet, though PC Racing does not publish its strength the way Figurati does
- Cooling fins
- Reusable stainless construction
- A long-standing track record in the motorcycle community
The FLO currently comes in three colors or finishes: polished aluminum, black, and black with polished fins.
How the Two Compare
Based on published specifications, we think it is fair to say the Figurati appears to offer the stronger overall filtration and protection package. The Figurati gives you a 25-micron absolute rating, five magnets with published strengths, a fully serviceable bypass system you can take apart and inspect, cooling fins, and complete inspectability at every service interval.
The FLO gives you a proven track record, reusable stainless construction, cooling fins, one magnet, and a 35-micron absolute rating on a one-pass test.
That is not hype. That is not fanboy talk. That is simply looking at what each product publishes and making a fair comparison.
That said, we sell both in the Law Abiding Biker Store. If you prefer the FLO, by all means grab that one. We carry it because it is a quality product and we want you to have options.

Why Magnets Matter More Than Most Riders Realize
A magnet does not replace the filter media. It backs it up. And that is an important distinction.
The stainless mesh is there to filter particles mechanically based on size. The magnets are there to grab ferrous metal debris that is moving through the oil stream regardless of size. They are doing completely different jobs and they complement each other in a way that no single-approach filter can match.
This is exactly why you cannot reduce the Figurati conversation down to a single micron number. Doing so ignores the magnetic capture side of the design entirely. When you combine a stainless mesh screen with five powerful neodymium magnets you are attacking oil contamination from multiple directions simultaneously. That is just smart engineering.
Build a Complete System: Pair Your Filter with Figurati Magnetic Dipsticks
Also available in the Law Abiding Biker Store
If you really want to step up your oil protection game, do not just focus on one component. Build a system.
The Figurati oil filter is already doing serious work inside your engine oil flow with that stainless mesh and five powerful magnets. But the Figurati magnetic dipsticks take it one step further because they are sitting in a completely different location in your motor.
The engine oil dipstick captures ferrous metal particles earlier in the oil cycle before they even reach the filter. And the transmission dipstick is worth calling out specifically because on a Harley the transmission is a completely separate case. That dipstick is actively capturing ferrous metal debris inside the transmission itself, which your engine oil filter never touches.
Compare that to those little OEM drain plug magnets. They only catch what happens to settle to the bottom. They are not actively sitting in the flow the way a dipstick is. It is simply not the same level of protection.
With the Figurati dipstick you have a powerful 2000-gauss neodymium magnet sitting right in the oil stream working all the time. When you combine the Figurati oil filter with the Figurati magnetic dipsticks you are now attacking contamination from multiple points in the system — catching particles early with the dipstick and catching particles at the filter. That is what it means to battle oil contamination from all angles.
And yes, they look absolutely killer on the bike. They come in the same colors as the filters so you can match everything up or mix and match to fit your style.
We carry the Figurati engine and transmission magnetic dipsticks in the Law Abiding Biker Store and we sell a ton of them for exactly the reasons described above. We also have a detailed video breaking them down completely. Head to the store listing and scroll to the bottom of the page to watch it.
Do Reusable Oil Filters Void Your Harley-Davidson Warranty?
No. Let's put this one to bed right now because it comes up constantly.
Using a reusable aftermarket oil filter like the Figurati or the PC Racing FLO does not automatically void your Harley-Davidson warranty. The same goes for any aftermarket throwaway paper filter as well.
Under federal warranty law and the Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act, using aftermarket parts does not automatically void a manufacturer's warranty. Harley-Davidson's own warranty language states that using non-genuine Harley parts alone will not void your coverage. A warranty claim could only be denied if the manufacturer could show with specific evidence that the aftermarket part directly caused the failure or damage being claimed. The burden of proof is on them.
The myth that aftermarket oil filters void your warranty needs to die. It is simply not accurate.
The Bottom Line for Everyday Harley Riders
You do not need to become an oil filtration engineer to make a smart decision here. You do not need to spend your weekend in the garage with a microscope and a particle counter.
Here is what you actually need to know:
Reusable stainless serviceable oil filters are established technology. They filter oil safely. They have been used for a long time and they are trusted by riders worldwide. The difference between the options really comes down to what kind of system you want on your bike and what benefits matter most to you.
If you want the strongest overall filtration and protection package with multiple magnets, a serviceable bypass, inspectability, cooling fins, and the ability to build a complete multi-point protection system with matching dipsticks, the Figurati is our recommendation.
If you want a proven longtime option with a solid track record, the PC Racing FLO is a legitimate choice and we carry that too.
Either way, stop losing sleep over internet comment wars about micron numbers and get back to riding.
