The HJC RPHA 91 Modular Motorcycle Helmet is the newest generation of HJC’s popular touring helmet line. Building on the solid foundation of the RPHA 90, this latest version refines aerodynamics, noise reduction, and comfort while keeping the price more accessible than high-end competitors like the Shoei Neotec 3.
As riders ourselves, we put this helmet through many miles across various weather conditions. Here’s what we found after long-term real-world testing.
Design & Aerodynamics: A Streamlined Upgrade
The older HJC RPHA 90 had a solid but rounded profile. The new RPHA 91 immediately stands out with a sleeker, more aerodynamic shell and a modernized look.
-
More streamlined and aggressive design
-
Reduced wind resistance for better stability at highway speeds
-
Visually comparable to premium modular helmets like the Shoei Neotec 3
While the Shoei is still the premium choice, the HJC offers a similar experience at roughly $350 less, making it an exceptional value.

Ventilation & Airflow Performance
Ventilation is key for long touring days, and HJC made significant updates from the RPHA 90 to the 91:
Improved Exhaust System
The rear exhaust vents are now larger and better integrated, providing enhanced airflow throughout the helmet.
New Top, Chin, and Brow Vents
-
Dual brow vents add direct airflow across the forehead
-
Redesigned top vent pops higher for improved circulation
-
Quieter operation compared to the RPHA 90
Minor Drawback: The new chin vent can be accidentally closed when handling the helmet—a small trade-off for better air movement.
Noise Reduction & Comfort
HJC significantly improved the neck roll and seal, resulting in a noticeably quieter ride.
-
Almost as quiet as the Shoei Neotec 3
-
Premium comfort liner – removable and washable
-
Neck roll design mimics higher-end helmets
After extensive testing, we found the RPHA 91 to be one of the quietest mid-range modular helmets available today.
Shield & Visor System
Smoother Mechanism & New Features
The RPHA 91’s visor system underwent several changes from the previous generation:
-
Pinlock ready (lens included) for anti-fog performance
-
Adjustable drop-down sun visor with three positions
-
Easier shield removal – tool-free swap for different tints
A Few Quirks
-
Detents (visor stopping points) are looser than the RPHA 90, causing the shield to slam shut at high speed if left open one detent for airflow.
-
Shield lift/close tab is side-mounted instead of centered, which can flex the shield when opening with one hand and bind it up.
Despite these small issues, the system works well for the price range and is easy to operate with gloves.

Bluetooth Integration & Compatibility
The RPHA 91 is pre-designed for the Sena Smart HJC Bluetooth system, allowing clean integration of the control module and speakers.
However, as we recommend for most riders, you can easily mount a Cardo Packtalk Edge or similar system for better interoperability with other riders and ecosystems.
Just be aware that the Bluetooth plate on the helmet reduces mounting area for external units.
Interior Liner & Fit
-
Fully removable and machine-washable liner and cheek pads
-
Integrated speaker cutouts for any Bluetooth system
-
Comfortable fit comparable to the Neotec 3
For sizing, refer to the HJC helmet size chart available on the Law Abiding Biker Store listing.
Try your helmet indoors before removing tags to ensure a proper fit for returns or exchanges.
Chin Strap & Quick-Release System
One of our favorite upgrades is replacing the traditional D-ring with our own metal-to-metal ratchet chin buckle system, available from the Law Abiding Biker Store.
-
Stainless-steel quick-release buckle (no plastic knock-offs)
-
Easy on and off with gloves
-
No cutting or modifications to install
This upgrade matches the Shoei Neotec 3’s stock buckle and makes daily use much more convenient for riders.
Helmet Safety Ratings
The HJC RPHA 91 meets both DOT and ECE standards, making it legal and safe for use in North America and Europe.
Colors & Pricing
The RPHA 91 comes in a variety of colorways and graphic designs.
-
Base colors are roughly $350 less than the Shoei Neotec 3
-
Graphic models run about $370 less than comparable Shoei graphics
Available now in the Law Abiding Biker Store with free shipping on orders over $100 and no sales tax outside Washington State.
Final Thoughts: A Premium Helmet at a Mid-Range Price
The HJC RPHA 91 is a solid upgrade over the RPHA 90, offering better aerodynamics, a quieter ride, and excellent comfort—all at a price that undercuts premium competitors by hundreds of dollars. However, while it’s a more affordable option, helmets like the Shoei Neotec 3 still deliver a noticeably more premium experience — especially in areas such as the chin bar closing mechanism, shield detents, and overall mechanical operation
Pros
✅ Quiet ride for a mid-range helmet

✅ Optional tinted shields are available

Cons
❌ Loose visor detents may slam shut in crosswinds
