Protection Features: What You Get (and What You Don’t)

Let’s be honest—these are NOT our most protective riding shoes. If you’re heading out on multi-day cross-country touring, like our 12-day Canada ride, you'd want something like:

Icon Stormhawk Boot (much more robust protection + waterproof)
Icon Patrol 3 Boot (still flexible but better suited for long hours in the saddle)

That said, the CR-X Drystar still offers important protection for a lightweight shoe:

Toe Reinforcement

A reinforced toe box provides basic protection, though less substantial compared to our heavier touring boots.

Reinforced Heel Cup

A synthetic leather heel counter provides better-than-expected support and rigidity. This is one of the areas where the CR-X outperforms many lightweight shoes.

Ankle Protection

External ankle disk on the outside of the shoe
Internal padding sewn inside the medial side
Provides moderate ankle protection appropriate for a commuter shoe.

Shift Pad

Both shoes include a built-in shifter panel to prevent unnecessary wear—something not all lightweight shoes include.

Reflective Elements

Subtle but effective:

I'm normally a 9.5–10, and the size 10 fits comfortably. I could have easily worn a 9.5.

Installing the Klock Werks Flare Windshield on a Harley-Davidson 24 & Newer Touring Model

In this article and the video below we’re diving into one of our favorite and most trusted upgrades—installing a Klock Werks Flare Windshield on my 2024 Harley-Davidson Street Glide.

In this article, I’ll walk you through the installation process, explain the key features of the Klock Werks Flare windshield, and share tips on choosing the correct height for your ride.

What Makes the Flare Windshield Unique?

The Flare™ design gets its name from the upward “flare” at the top of the windshield. This flared lip redirects wind up and over the rider, greatly reducing head buffeting and wind fatigue—especially important during long-distance touring.

Choosing the Proper Windshield Height for Your Harley

Choosing the right windshield height is crucial. You don’t want a windshield that's too short (you’ll get blasted in the forehead) or too tall (you’ll be looking through it, which can be dangerous in rain or low light).

Here’s how to measure:

Sit on your motorcycle using the seat you ride with.
Use a yardstick placed across your upper lip.
Have a level on top of the yardstick
Have a partner measure from the center of the fairing/windshield bottom mount up to the bottom of the yardstick while it is level.
That measurement is your ideal windshield height.

For me, that was right at 8 inches, so I went with the 8″ Flare windshield. If you're between sizes (say 8.5”), you could go up to a 9″ if needed. It's not an exact science, but close enough matters a lot.

Installation Process: 2024 Harley Street Glide

Tools Needed:

Torx T25
Torx T27

The 2024 Harley-Davidson fairing redesign brought some changes to the way windshields mount. The Flare Windshield now includes custom mounting blocks to match this new setup.

Step-by-Step Overview:

Remove the four Torx T25 bolts securing your stock windshield.
Slide off the windshield and remove the OEM blocks using a T27 Torx.
Install the new Klock Werks mounting blocks—they're labeled left and right (as you sit on the bike).
Fit the panel and make sure the bottom hooks and holes line up properly.
You may need to apply firm pressure to align the rubber mounting holes.
Use the included longer bolts to secure the windshield.
Don't overtighten—just snug is perfect to avoid stripping.
Clean the windshield with Bugslide (more on that below).

🔧 Note: If you're installing on a Road Glide, the install is slightly different—mostly involving spacers instead of replacement blocks.

One Final Essential: Clean It with Bugslide

Once your new Klock Werks windshield is installed, protect it with our go-to product: Bugslide. This waterless cleaner and polish is completely safe for:

I flew from Washington State to Palm Bay, Florida to test ride and review the all-new 2026 Harley-Davidson Police Road Glide—and let me tell you, this is not just a civilian Road Glide with lights slapped on. Harley built this machine from the ground up specifically for the needs of police motors units.

The Evolution of a Legend

From Batwing to Sharknose

For decades, the Harley-Davidson Electra Glide dominated police fleets across the country. The batwing fairing became an iconic symbol of American law enforcement.

But the landscape began shifting with the explosive popularity of the Mission King of the Baggers race series. Harley invested heavily into R&D from that racing platform, and we’ve seen that tech filtering into production bikes for years.

The writing was on the wall:
A Police Road Glide was coming.

May 2023 – NAMOA Conference (Yakima, WA):
A Harley rep quietly rolled a civilian Road Glide into their booth and encouraged officers to ride it. I ran it through the course myself—and loved it. Looking back, Harley was warming the law enforcement community up to the idea.
September 2023 – Harley 120th Anniversary, Milwaukee:
Harley officially announced the Police Road Glide was in development. The bike on display wasn’t final, but it confirmed what many of us suspected.

Top Speed: 120 mph
Previous police models required 19 seconds to hit 100 mph—this one does it in 12.6.

For the first time ever on a police Harley, the bike includes the full touchscreen IFCU (Infotainment Control Unit).

It’s fully integrated and specifically programmed for police use.

Officers have been modifying seats with PVC pipe and homemade risers for years. No more.

Laden Seat height:

31.3 inches (Police Road Glide)
26.6 inches (Civilian Road Glide)

I’m 5'8″, and at the lowest position I could flat-foot the bike with ease.

With taller bars pulled slightly back, low-speed bar-lock maneuvers felt natural and balanced.

Controls, Grips, and Switchgear

Harley integrated large red police-specific light and siren switches on both control clusters—easy to reach and intuitive.

Additional features:

Heated grips with recessed button
Adjustable front brake lever

However:

Clutch lever is not adjustable
Still uses the yellow plastic cable adjuster

Are the front regular forks and axial mounted calibers adequate? Yes.
Would inverted forks and radial mounted brakes be better for professional riders? Also yes.
Cost likely played a major factor.

Installation Overview

The EZ Shift is simple to install using basic hand tools. Here’s a quick overview: (see video below for full detailed tutorial)

1. Remove your rear shift linkage

Loosen the OEM threaded stud at the rear shifter arm and remove the linkage.

2. Slide the EZ Shift over the rear shifter arm

The curved backside aligns perfectly with the stock arm.

3. Install the included bolt

This replaces the OEM stud location. Use medium-strength (blue) Loctite if desired.

4. Tighten the set screw

The set screw presses into the shifter arm for added security.

5. Reattach and adjust your shift linkage

Adjust length until your shifter peg is in the ideal position.

6. Fine-tune the shifter peg height

Remove the toe shifter from the splines and reposition if necessary.

That’s it—your Harley now shifts like a completely different bike.

Note: Earlier test units had interference with 2024+ side covers. The production version in the Law Abiding Biker™ Store is updated with a narrower block—no rubbing issues on pre-2024 or 2024+ Harley models.

Secure wiring with zip-ties as needed, reinstall seat and side panel.

3. Top Mount Between Fender Strut & Saddlebag (Most Hidden Option)

For riders who want the port virtually invisible, this is the stealthiest option. The port sits between the saddlebag and the fender strut—completely hidden when the bag is installed.
