Why We Chose Khrome Werks HP Plus Mufflers
There are plenty of slip-on options out there for Harley-Davidson touring models, and we carry several in the Law Abiding Biker Store. But for this build, Lurch went with the Khrome Werks HP Plus with classic tips in chrome — and for good reason. These mufflers are designed to add real sound and performance without going overboard. They come with fiberglass packing and an internal exhaust configuration that delivers a great tone right out of the box in their stock setup.
The HP Plus lineup is available in both 4-inch (for Harley-Davidson Softail models) and 4.5-inch (for Harley-Davidson touring models), so make sure you're picking the right size for your bike.

Tools You'll Need for the Install
This is a straightforward slip-on muffler install that most Harley-Davidson riders can handle in their own garage. Here's what you'll need:
A 9/16 socket for the left side main muffler clamp bolt, a 5/8 socket for the right side main muffler clamp bolt, a 1/2-inch socket for the upper bracket bolts on both sides, and some lubricant in case your stock mufflers don't want to come off easily. That's it — no cutting, no welding, no headaches.
Step-by-Step Khrome Werks HP Plus Muffler Install on a Harley-Davidson Touring Model
Remove the Saddlebags
Start by removing both saddlebags to give yourself room to work. This makes everything more accessible and prevents accidental scratches.
Remove the Stock Mufflers
On the left side, use a 9/16 socket to loosen the main muffler clamp bolt. Then grab your 1/2-inch socket and remove the two upper bracket bolts that pass through the rubber mount. Once everything is loose, start working the muffler off the header pipe. Twist it back and forth as you pull — if the bike has some miles on it, the muffler may be stubborn. A little lubricant around the connection point goes a long way.
Move to the right side and repeat the process. The right side main muffler clamp bolt takes a 5/8 socket instead of a 9/16. Same 1/2-inch socket for the two bracket bolts. Loosen everything up and work the muffler off.

Transfer Your OEM Clamps
Remove the OEM clamps from your stock mufflers — you'll reuse these on the new Khrome Werks HP Plus mufflers. Here's a pro tip: slide the clamp onto the new muffler, set the muffler pipe-end down on the concrete, and give it a firm tap down. This seats the clamp perfectly flush with the end of the pipe, which is exactly where it needs to be for a clean, tight fit on the header.
Install the Khrome Werks HP Plus Mufflers
Slide the left side muffler onto the header pipe and finger-start your two bracket bolts. Snug them down with your 1/2-inch socket, then tighten the main muffler clamp bolt with the 9/16 socket. A reminder — don't overtighten. The muffler expands when it heats up and will seat itself just fine.
For the right side, if the fit is snug, apply a little lubricant to the header pipe end to help slide the muffler into place. Install the two bracket bolts with the 1/2-inch socket and tighten the muffler clamp bolt with the 5/8 socket.
Clean up any greasy fingerprints on your new chrome with Bug Slide — our number one go-to waterless motorcycle cleaner, also available in the Law Abiding Biker Store. We use it on chrome, paint, black trim, denim finishes, windshields, helmets, face shields, and boots. It smells great, cleans without chemicals, and leaves a protective microscopic finish that makes future bugs and grime come off easier.
