Khrome Werks HP Plus Muffler Inserts — What Are They?

Khrome Werks designed their HP Plus muffler lineup with a modular insert system. The HP Plus mufflers are available in 4-inch (for Harley-Davidson Softail models) and 4.5-inch (for Harley-Davidson touring models). Out of the box, the HP Plus mufflers come with fiberglass packing and a stock internal configuration that directs exhaust flow in a specific pattern. These inserts enhance that stock configuration — they don't replace it.

Each insert changes the direction and flow rate of your exhaust, which directly affects both sound and performance. More restriction generally means more back pressure and torque, while less restriction opens things up for volume at the expense of some performance.

How to Swap Khrome Werks Baffle Inserts

One of the best things about this system is how simple it is to swap inserts. Here's how it works:

Remove your muffler end cap (tip) by taking out the screw on the side and the one on the bottom. Once the end cap is off, the insert slides right into the muffler body. Inside the stock configuration, you'll find two threaded holes that align with two holes on the insert. Thread in the two small screws that come with the insert, and you're done. Want to try a different insert? Back the screws out, slide the insert out, and slide a new one in.

Compare that to many other exhaust systems on the market where you have to pull the entire internal assembly out, and over time those components can basically weld themselves together from heat. Khrome Werks clearly put thought into making this a user-friendly system for the everyday Harley-Davidson rider.

The Four Khrome Werks Baffle Inserts Explained

1. The Plug — Quietest Option

The Plug is the shortest of the four inserts and is designed to be the quietest baffle in the lineup. It essentially plugs the exhaust opening, forcing exhaust gases to travel up and around the insert before exiting. If you love the sound of your Khrome Werks HP Plus mufflers but want to tame them a bit — maybe for early morning rides or long highway cruising — this is the insert for you.

2. The Louvered — The All-Around Favorite

The Louvered insert is longer and features a spiraled design with small cutouts that allow exhaust to pass through in a controlled manner. This is your classic, all-around Harley-Davidson sound. It delivers that deep, traditional rumble that most riders are after without being obnoxious. For a lot of builds, this is going to be the sweet spot — great sound, solid performance, and a crowd-pleaser across the board.

3. The Performance — Best of Both Worlds

The Performance insert is where things get interesting. This insert is engineered to create a specific amount of back pressure that promotes torque and improved acceleration. The internal design forces exhaust up and around before exiting through cutouts at the end.

During real-world testing on the 2024 Harley-Davidson Road Glide, we could genuinely feel improved acceleration in the power band with the Performance inserts installed. The bike took off and accelerated noticeably quicker. On the pad, it sounded similar to the Louvered, but out on the road, you could feel the difference in how the bike pulled. This insert is especially well-suited for higher horsepower Harley-Davidson builds where you want optimal torque without sacrificing sound quality.

4. The Ripper — For Maximum Volume

The name says it all. The Ripper is essentially a straight pipe insert — you can literally see right through it. Your exhaust goes in one end and out the other with minimal obstruction. It's loud, it pops on deceleration, and it makes a statement.

Here's the trade-off: without proper back pressure, you're going to sacrifice some performance. We've tested straight-pipe-style inserts in the past, and you'll feel the difference in how the bike accelerates. But if raw volume and attitude are what you're after, the Ripper delivers. Just know that your neighbors might not appreciate it as much as you do.

Real-World Testing Results on a 2024 Harley-Davidson Road Glide

We tested all four inserts back-to-back on a 2024 Road Glide that had been running the HP Plus mufflers in stock configuration. Here's what we found:

The stock configuration sounds great on its own — there's nothing wrong with running it as-is. The Louvered brought a classic Harley rumble without going overboard. The Performance insert sounded similar to the Louvered at idle but delivered noticeably better acceleration and throttle response on the road. The Ripper was loud and aggressive with decel pop, but you could feel it lacked the torque and pull of the Performance insert.

After testing, our verdict was clear: the Performance insert gives you the best combination of sound and ride quality. You get a great exhaust note plus optimal back pressure for real-world torque gains. Our tester was torn between the Louvered and Performance but ultimately leaned toward the Performance because of the way it made the bike feel under acceleration.

A Note on Tuning Your Harley-Davidson After Installing Baffle Inserts

Each Khrome Werks insert changes the exhaust flow rate and direction, which means your air-fuel mixture changes too. Once you decide which insert you're going to run the majority of the time, it's best to remap your electronic fuel injection for optimal performance. We recommend the Vance & Hines FP4 (Fuel Pack 4) — it's the easiest tuner on the market for everyday riders and does an excellent job with autotune. For 2024 and newer Harley-Davidson models, the FP4 isn't available just yet, but as soon as it is, we'll have it in the Law Abiding Biker Store.
