Podcast-In this episode I was fortunate to have Law Abiding Biker Patron Member Russell Roberts in the studio. He is an awesome photographer and does video too. He has much experience with using and mounting GoPro action cameras to motorcycles. LawDog was also on a mic and as a beginner had a ton of great questions to ask Russell and I. I think he asked questions many of you out there want to know and how to get started from the ground up. We reveal how you Bikaholics can get started with action cameras when out riding your motorcycle.

Good luck using the cheap plastic GoPro “bar mount” to attach your camera to your motorcycle. They break after several uses and you'll get unwanted vibrations in your footage. We talk about these mounts and more.

We also talk about mounting your GoPro to your motorcycle helmet, which I often do during moto biker vlogs. It can give a great rider perspective. There are mics and attachments you'll need to talk into your GoPro while riding down the road. I talk about the equipment I use and list affiliate links to the exact items I use below.

Many times I'm asked what GoPro settings I use to record video. Of course, that depends on the exact look I want, but I can say a good starting point for most bikers would be to record at 1080p and 60fps (frames per second). I am not a fan of recording at 4K right now, due to the massive file sizes and management of those files. And the fact that most viewers will never see it in 4k anyways.

I am also asked what software I currently use to edit my videos. I use Final Cut Pro X on my Mac for most of my video editing with many purchased add-ons. Rusell and I also use Adobe Premiere, which can be used on MAC or PC. If you are not doing advanced things then for most iMovie, which comes free on Mac's, works just fine. GoPro also has free desktop editing software. There are also free programs for PC too, but I don't use PC's so you'll have to see what's available.

Last, we compare other action cameras on the market for you. We compare GoPro to those cams and give you our opinions on the many choices out there.

You'll also need a good quality quiet helmet if you want to moto vlog. I use a Schuberth C3 Pro helmet to cut down on any wind noise. Adding a wind-screen of sorts to the mic can also cut down on wind noise. I'm also behind a fairing most the time on my Harley Street Glide and that helps a ton. These are all things you'll need to consider and testing will be key to see what works best for your needs.

GoPro Hero 4 Recall-Audio Thumping, Helicopter, Popping Sounds-Know Before You Buy

Video-I put out an article and video about a year ago on a serious audio issue that GoPro Hero 4 cameras have. At that time, I went through 3 defective GoPro cameras and chaos when trying to get GoPro to send me a camera that worked.

The problem is that many GoPro Hero 4 cameras have a thumping, helicopter, popping, or clicking noise in the audio file upon playback. This is a serious hardware issue and GoPro has ignored it for far too long. It only happens when you have the WiFi activated on the camera while recording. We have WiFi on, so we can use the iPhone app and remote controller.

Like many, we here at Law Abiding Biker™ Media are somewhat tied to our GoPro cameras because we've accumulated so many accessories over the years. It would be hard to start from scratch with a new brand camera, but we're about ready to at this point. We are buying another drone and this is exactly why we're not going with a GoPro Karma Quadcopter, we don't trust them much anymore. Instead, we're going with a DJI Mavic Pro. It's much better drone in my opinion anyways.

It had been a year since my last defective GoPro Hero 4 Silver camera purchase. We needed yet another GoPro to add to our collection for a current project. Yup, I ordered another GoPro Hero 4 Silver directly through GoPro's website, against my better judgment.

The camera arrived at my door, and yes it had the same exact audio problem! I was super disgusted and contacted GoPro, reminding them of my prior 3 bad camera debacle a year prior and giving them the link to my YouTube video. They could care less and wanted me to perform all kinds of tests and send them video files again. Nope, I'm not going to waste my time again, so give me a return merchandise authorization (RMA) immediately is what I told them. I returned the camera and got my full refund.

I knew there had to be an easier way………..

I then went to a local Best Buy Store and learned their policies, which is that if you bring a defective GoPro back within 15 days of purchase they'll immediately replace it with a brand new unit and they'll deal with GoPro. This takes you out of the mix and you can be back up and running, instead of performing all the tests, returns, and waiting for a new GoPro.

Here are my suggestions for purchasing a new GoPro Hero 4:

Don't buy it online or from the GoPro website directly
Check with your local electronics store and find out their return policies
Buy it local if your electronics store has a favorable return policy
Test your new GoPro immediately to see if it has audio problems

I think that most consumers understand that any company can have manufacturing issues with hardware. Consumers will forgive that, but they will never forget how they were treated and how a company handled the issued.

This has been an epic failure for GoPro in customer service and satisfaction. There are many other action cameras out there that are just as good as GoPro and I know many have moved on because of this public relations failure.

The worst part is that GoPro is getting the returned defective cameras and then failing to test replacement units before sending them out to consumers. There are so many stories, to include mine, where GoPro sends a customer up to 4 bad cameras! Seriously, there is no excuse for that sort of customer service failure.

GoPro should have come out and publicly admitted to consumers that they had a large number of cameras in the field with audio hardware problems and offered to replace them immediately.

Another interesting point is that GoPro will tell you that there are a small amount of units affected. I find that to be false and misleading. You see, many GoPro consumers will never have a need for the audio portion of the camera and thus will never discover the problem. Many use GoPro's for video capture only. Then, there are those that don't use the WiFi and remote features, so they would not know there is a problem either. Those of us that need usable audio are the ones that are discovering the issue.

Go ahead GoPro and continue to bury your head in the sand………….

Best GoPro Motorcycle Bar Mount-Biker Gripper™ Handlebar Mount & GoPro Head

We film professional tutorial & review videos for bikers around the world here at Law Abiding Biker™ Podcast & Media. For many projects we rely on GoPro action cameras mounted to our motorcycles. I know bikers/motorcyclists out there also like to mount GoPro cameras to their motorcycles to share trips with friends and family. For years I and other bikers have struggled with cheap junky GoPro motorcycle mounts all over the internet, Amazon, and eBay.

Yes, even the GoPro brand handlebar mount I am not a fan of. It is made of cheaper type plastic and has problems mounting to larger diameter bars. In time we have had several of these plastic GoPro brand mounts break at weak points and that is frustrating. Additionally, the GoPro brand bar mount system is clunky and it can often become a task getting it set up with the thumb screws.

Further, there is a rubber sleeve inside the bar mount in an attempt to keep it positioned on a bar. When you turn the mount to fix your GoPro to the position you want, it binds up and folds over. Because the plastic is weak it flexes, which can cause unwanted vibrations or camera movements. These are just a few of the struggles we have all had with the GoPro brand bar mount system.

So, out of frustration the journey began for me……….I knew that I needed to come up with or find the best solution for bikers to mount their beloved GoPro cameras to their motorcycles. Clearly all motorcycles have handlebars and many have more bars than that, such as engine guards, saddlebag guards, and luggage racks just to name a few. Many of these bars are different sizes and that certainly needed to be taken into account. Bikers can also be rough on things, so it has to be sturdy. It needed to be the strongest GoPro motorcycle mount in the world. Many were rigorously tested over much time and many failed.
